An Effective Way to Sell on Social Media [for Dummies]

An Effective Way to Sell on Social Media [for Dummies]

If you’ve been following me, then you would know I do social media and internet marketing a little differently than everyone else; I’m the kid who colours outside the lines.

You are human, and yet you’re not human, or at least you don’t sound like one. You sound like a badly tuned robot, and that’s just me being nice. Some of you are illiterate, obnoxious fools waiting for some sale to fall into your lap because you think a social media page is really code for epic online sales generating genie. The rest of you are too self-absorbed to realise that you don’t even understand social media; and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. What you think you know, I know 10 times more, and I also know that you’re wrong too; but that’s a rant for another post.

90% of the brands on social media have not the faintest idea of what they are doing.

Now, why would I say that? Am I mad? Have I lost a few of my screws?

Do this BEFORE posting anything on Social Media

Do this BEFORE posting anything on Social Media

Social media is a great way your business or brand can connect with your industry, your consumers, and potential consumers. It’s also a great way to make or break your brand. The risk elevates if you’re using your social media as a promotion portal for your career or a new brand.

We’ve seen big brands do this in the past; from Coca-Cola, to American Airlines, everyone has made a few hiccups and bad-posts in their social media career. For big brands like Coca-Cola though, all they need to do is issue an apology and lay low for a few days, and they’ll be all better, but for smaller brands, this can really hurt your attempt to getting into the spotlight. One wrong post, and it can be all over.

ICANN denies Massy the Domain massy.com

The Massy rebrand doesn’t seem to get any easier for the group company. I found this on TTOnline.org (thread linked here) this afternoon, and after reading the ruling, I knew I had to write this. The public is hitting on them hard, and I would hate to be in their shoes right about now.

On April 12th 2014, Paul M. DeCicco, a panelist for the National Arbitration Forum, ruled in favour of Gregory Ricks on the Neal & Massy Holdings Limited v. Gregory Ricks dispute resolution over the domain massy.com. The domain is currently registered to Internet.bs Corp.

The complaint was filed on March 18th, 2014 to National Arbitration Forum. The details of the decision outlined that Neal and Massy requested the name to be transferred from Internet.bs Corp to them.

One of the Best Advertising Techniques I’ve seen

From the Youtube Page: On the 130th anniversary of the founding of Banco Sabadell we wanted to pay homage to our city by means of the campaign “Som Sabadell” (We are Sabadell) . This is the flashmob that we arranged as a final culmination with the participation of 100 people from the Vallès Symphony Orchestra, the Lieder, Amics de l’Òpera and Coral Belles Arts choirs. https://www.bancsabadell.com

Johnny Walker Advertising FAIL

Johnny Walker Advertising FAIL

“Johnny Walker’s Keep Walking” is one of the most iconic slogans to date, but they have had a couple hiccups along the way in their journey to global greatness. For instance, their latest advertising campaign, as seen in the photo.

Most global companies have advertising campaigns which are used, globally, however, I will state that not all of them are local-friendly, especially in Trinidad. Many campaigns from global brands like Coca Cola, Pepsi and Johnny Walker to name a few, completely miss the target for some countries.

In the photo, you see a race car driver with the caption “Failed Driving Test”, and their iconic “Keep Walking”. I’ve seen a post on Facebook stating that it should have said “Keep Driving”, but still there is a deeper flaw most aren’t noticing.

Self Branding

I have spent months (and quite possibly years) thinking of the perfect name for a business which really encompasses all that I do, with no such luck, simply because I do so much in different industries. But then it dawned on me… why am I trying to create a brand that defines me? Why do I want another name to precede my reputation when I can use my name to brand myself. I already had the domain, so why not?

So the big question is how do you self brand?
It’s not as easy as it sounds. If you have never done the whole internal “Who am I” searching, prepare to do a lot of it now. Who am I? What do I do? What do I want to portray? If you don’t know who you are, as most people actually don’t, then you’re in for a trip. Asking relatives and close friends to describe you in a few words really helps you to get to know what other people think of you. Remember that your self impression is how people perceive you. For instance, if you come off as ingenuine, people will think you’re full of BS. So, its good to get to know what people really think of you as a person, and as a professional.
